What to Expect
Advances in medicine are continuously shortening the recovery time for patients. Non-invasive procedures and state-of-the-art equipment have reduced the lengths of visits to the hospital to hours instead of days for some procedures. To help us provide you with an exceptional experience we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Pre-Surgery Consultation / Testing
For most procedures you will be contacted three to five days in advance by the outpatient surgery nurse. At that time you will be able to schedule an appointment for a "pre-op assessment". Your assessment will include a review of your medical history and medications, introduction to the staff that will be assisting on the day of your procedure to discuss what to expect, and an interview with the nurse anesthetist to discuss the type of anesthesia to be used. In addition any lab testing or radiology exams ordered by your physician will be conducted at this time.

Before Arriving at the Hospital
It is very important that you refrain from eating or drinking anything after midnight the night before your surgery, EXCEPT for your breathing pill, heart pill, blood pressure medicine, ulcer medication. Continue to take these medications as prescribed, but with only a sip of water. If you are diabetic, do NOT take your morning insulin. Instead, bring it with you to the hospital.

We ask that you do not bring any unnecessary items with you to the hospital. This includes any jewelry, watches, or necklaces. In addition you will need to arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home after discharge.

Upon Arrival at the Hospital
Plan to arrive at the hospital at the time provided to you through our Central Scheduling department. As with any procedure, we ask that you meet first with our admissions staff to register. There are a few forms that you will need to read and complete, and we will need your insurance cards and identification.

Before Surgery
Our admissions staff will arrange for you to be escorted to the designated pre-procedure area. There you will be asked to change into a surgical gown. Any personal belongings will be left with your friend or family member.

One of our outpatient surgery nurses will check your pulse, blood pressure, and if needed begin an IV. At your scheduled surgery time, the nurse will escort you to the operating room. Your guest may wait in the surgery waiting area. They will be notified when you are in recovery following your surgery.

During Surgery
Once you arrive in the operating room, the nurse will discuss with you what to expect during the procedure. Your blood pressure, pulse, breathing, temperature, and dressing will be checked frequently during surgery

After Surgery
Once your surgery has been successfully completed, you will be escorted to one of the medical center's private outpatient rooms. There you will be cared for until you are released by your physician. During that time you will be given pain and/or nausea medications if needed. You will also be given something to eat and drink, and asked to use the restroom prior to discharge.

Your nurse will provide you with a discharge packet and written instructions for continuing your care at home. You will be instructed on precautions to take over the next few days at home. These include diet, medications, activity, and when to call your physician.

Please be sure to keep your follow-up appointment made for you by your surgeon's office.

Anesthesia Services
An important piece of your surgical visit is appropriate pain management and surgical anesthesia. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists at South Central Kansas Medical Center are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and offer these services to our patients.

Depending on the procedure, patients have a choice of different types of anesthesia ranging from simple sedation to general anesthesia for major procedures. For our obstetric patients epidural anesthesia is available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Other types of anesthesia are also available for those not desiring an epidural. The choice is always tailored to fit your needs and the CRNAs will be with you the entire time.

In addition to surgical anesthesia, the CRNAs, in cooperation with the physicians, offer an interventional pain management clinic. For people with acute and chronic back, spine and neck problems, we offer a host of injection related therapies aimed at reducing your discomfort and allowing you to return more successfully to your normal activities of daily life.
